Ski Holidays for Children

Ski Holidays for Children

Taking the kids on a ski holiday can be one of the most rewarding experiences you and the children will enjoy as a family or one of the most stressful! Forward planning is a must and we have listed below the core information you will need. We have made some suggestions in what we believe works and as parents of three demanding young children ourselves, these have been tried and tested!

"What a fab week, what more can I say, how did you put up with 10 kids and 8 adults!
Thanks for your sense of fun!"      VC family and friends - March 2007

Huski prides itself in being a child-friendly organisation and we'll help you arrange your precious holiday ski time as much or as little as you want! It is also worth noting that to get the best out of the whole Chamonix ski area, or indeed the entire Mont Blanc massif it is worth having your own transport. Not a problem if you are staying in one of our catered chalets as we run a minibus service but if you are staying self-catered it's certainly worth having a car or book our plus package which includes our excellent in-resort minibus service.

Ski Lessons

In an ideal world we imagine we'll be skiing merrily down the pistes with our 5yr old, teenage son on a snowboard and granny bringing up the rear!! And whilst the goal is of course to ski 'en famile' one day, everyone has to learn the basics. As a general rule we recommend using the services of professionals be it for crèche, ski instructor or ski school and as much as possible.

It is imperative to book your ski options at the same time as you book your holiday to avoid disappointment! Please email us your requirements and we'll make the reservations for you. Please also remember to book a helmet with your ski hire if your children don't already own one.

Please note: Some organisations will require a deposit on reservation which we will take from the party leaders Credit Card.

Our top recommendation is: Private lessons

If your budget allows, paying for a private instructor gives you the flexibility and peace of mind needed so that you can also enjoy your free ski time and this could provide you with the key to a successful holiday.

We work with Prestigue, a small private school of local instructors offering a 3 hr lesson am or pm, or all day. The beauty of this system is that the instructor will arrive at your chalet at 08:30. You will depart with him in his minibus or vehicle (and /or Huski transport) to the slopes. If you book with him all day, he will return you to the chalet. They are good English speakers, and very flexible. And why not split the lesson into segments of 1.5hrs giving the different abilities (inevitably found in your party) the chance to ski privately? If you book well in advance there is a good chance we can secure Theirry Chibou for your group, director of the school, whose flamboyant and vivacious nature make him a great hit with children and adults alike. You won't be disappointed!

Private lesson rates include 1 instructor for 5 pax.  A supplement of 10€ pp applies for 6th/7th/8th person.

Options for ages 3-10yrs

The majority of our chalets are located in Les Houches. This is an ideal ski area for families. The slopes are sheltered, tree lined and there are lot's of restaurants and buvets for a hot chocolate (and loo stop!). For Ski Schools we recommend the ESF and Evolution 2 as the best options for group lessons. Situated nr our main chalet La Forge (just a few minutes by car) is the 'Chavants' Nursery and ski kindergarten offering mornings or full days of supervised crèche and beginner lessons on their private ski fun park.

Alternatively there is a second well established ski kindergarten/crèche called the Panda club which is situated in Argentiere about 20 mins by car from La Forge. If your party includes skiers of above intermediate standard they will certainly enjoy the skiing at the head end of the valley at Les Grands Montets or Le Tour. You may find it easier to place your children in the Panda Club and we are happy to drop you to Argentiere each day.

Les Chavants Ski Kindergarten in Les Houches village

In a comfortable chalet close to the Prarion ski lifts is the local crèche which has teamed up with the ESF to offer a formula of supervised day-care and beginner ski lessons. The resort, together with the French Ski School, has made a great effort to provide facilities for the 3 - 5 year age group to enable them to take their first steps in learning to ski. The result is a very well-equipped "jardin des neiges" (snow garden) with lots of amusing activities and games, inflatable's, models/statues, a giant caterpillar, two nursery lifts with specialised instructors (1 instructor for 8 children) allowing your children to learn as they play. Crèche facilities include sleeping arrangements for the younger children. Open from Sun-Fri 08:30-17:30

ESF Traditional Group lessons for children

The ESF has it's office in the centre of Les Houches just near the Tourist office and a second office nr the Prarion bubble lift. As well as 60 instructors offering their services they organise speed and star tests during the school holidays and have opened a new school this year aimed at teenagers and older children who would like to try their hand at freeride, boardercross and snowboard techniques!

Group Lessons - from Beginner to Competition Level

ESF instructors will do their best to help your children improve and have fun at the same time. Lessons are from Sunday to Friday inclusive, mornings or afternoons. Out of school holidays periods, lessons are mainly in the morning . Skiing on the same runs as Mum and Dad From 6 years groups of eight for beginners and ten for better skiers.,Ski or snowboard tests taken on continual assessment during the lessons Sunday to Friday and awarded at the end of the week.

Even when it snows it is possible to continue skiing in the forest , away from any avalanche risk, leaving them with a taste of adventure and some really magical memories.

Snowboard

3 x 1/2 day course (3 x 2h30)€ 81.00 pp

A team of specialised snowboarding instructors have devised a programme specifically for each level so as to maximise each pupil's progress. The ski school has limited the number of pupils per group to a maximum of six. Courses run from Sunday to Friday, mornings or afternoons. Out of school holiday times the courses are mainly in the mornings.

Snow-shoeing - great for families or grandparents!

One winter sport that anyone can try - easy to learn to do and with a multitude of itineraries for all levels. You can discover the true atmosphere of the mountains with qualified instructors. Day and half-day hikes are organized every day with various themes :- Fauna and flora, local history, glaciology and the structure and formation of the snow layers. Transport to the different walking areas is provided. The snowshoe hire is included in the price of the group outings.

Info : You will need to have good walking shoes or boots and suitable clothing for the mountains. Please contact us for details.

Sledging and night skiing!

Not for the faint-hearted! But there is an ideal sleding area for kids at Les Tourchet, a separate dedicated nursery area in Les Houches with two drag lifts. Plastic sledges can be purchased cheaply nearby, but we do recommend the use of helmets. Night skiing is also available here on Wednesdays from 17:00 to 21:00 and as the area is next to the Les Houches outdoor skating rink you can make an evening of it! (Walk to the Delice brasserie afterwards for a fortifying Vin Chaud!)

Panda Club

Situated close to the Grand Montet lift and main car park for the Argentiere lift system, similar in format to the Les Chavants Kindergarten, the Panda provides all day or half day nursery or traditional ski school for all ages. English speaking staff, fun play park, one lift tow and Les Chosalets nursery slopes located closeby.

Babies 3 months - 3 yrs

The best option is to bring Granny/Aunty/God mum to the chalet to help with the care of any little ones in the chalet, that's if you want to ski of course! If that is not possible here are suggested solutions:

Municipal crèche

There is a local government crèche/nursery in Les Houches that can accept babies from 3 months. It is located in nr the centre and benefits from professional staff and excellent facilities. However places are very limited and whilst they advise early booking there is no facility to do so and they ask parents to telephone the week before to see if there is a place available. Sometimes it can work very well, other times there is no space therefore sad it is to say its probably not an option to be relied upon! Best to contact them direct (or we'll do it on your behalf) Tel: 0033 (0) 45054 4819

Alpine Nannies

We can help you locate a private nanny to join your ski holiday!

Chalet Information

Chalets certainly provide child friendly accommodation with 'Home away from Home' appeal. For families with children under 8 yrs old we ask that you book any catered chalet exclusively to your group. For families with older kids we welcome you at La Forge and we'll mix you in with any other groups staying in the chalet.

For mixed groups with children we prefer to keep dinner a 'grown-up' affair. For under 12yrs we offer a 'Kidz high tea'.  Chef can either offer that nights menu or will cook cuisine with Kidz appeal; spaghetti, home-made pizza, crispy chicken fillets with fried potatoes for example. These are all freshly prepared. We will look forward to speaking with mum on the phone and receiving the hit list!

We offer our kidz high tea 6 nights per week whilst our other catering is 5 nights. This allows family groups to eat out on chefs night off together. But on the other night it means that adults are able to eat out alone! We can organise a local babysitter at approx 12€ per hour. If family groups would prefer to eat in together on the 6th night we can organise an extra nights catering at a supplement of £20 per adult.

The chalet itself is well equipped with everything kids will need, DVD, Sat TV, a basket of toys, books and games and for older kids our own 'Baby-foot' (table football) We have a cots, and highchairs but we don't supply cot bedding or baby car seats. Please remember to bring your own childs feeding equipment, nappies and formula milk. For little ones it is also prudent to pack two of everything; ski suits, mittens, hats, sunscreen etc.

By the nature of the Chamonix valley it is certainly best to have your own transport when staying self-catering and we also recommend that large groups staying on a catered holiday also consider having at least one car. Certainly our excellent minibus service is available to take everyone skiing in the morning and collecting everyone at tea-time but please don't rely on our transport to take little ones back at lunchtime if they're cold or tired as invariably our staff will have left for their own ski time or they've gone shopping. We are happy to supply you a rate card for our adhoc minibus service.
